Education Through War Games

Step into the command center of creativity! Discover how wargames—yes, the same kind used by the U.S. Air Force—can transform the way gifted students think, plan, and problem-solve. In this session, we’ll explore Air Force Wargame: Indo-Pacific, designed by the Air Force Wargaming Institute to teach strategic thinking and systems analysis through a simulated conflict between the U.S. and China in the South China Sea. Lt Col "Splinter" Alon will walk us through how his team designed wargames to generate insights and educational outcomes for US Air Force Airmen. Splinter will give examples of stripping the basic mechanics from common board games and rebuilding them to fit your own custom educational needs!

Meet Lt Col Redem J. Alon

Commander Lt Col Kedem J. Alon

Lt Col Kedem “Splinter” Alon is the Commander and Professor of Aerospace Studies of Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) Detachment 017 at Troy University. He serves as the Aerospace Studies department head, instructs courses on national security affairs, supervises four faculty and staff members and has overall responsibility for training and mentoring more than 30 students preparing to become Air Force or Space Force officers.

Lt Col Alon earned his commission in May 2009 through the United States Air Force Academy. He completed pilot training in 2011 and since then has held a variety of flying and academic positions. He completed his first flying assignment as a KC-135 Stratotanker instructor pilot and followed with an assignment as an instructor pilot in the MQ-9 Reaper. Lt Col Alon has also built and directed analytical and educational wargames for the Air Force as a LeMay Center Wargaming Division Chief.

Splinter's combat experiences include commanding crews during refueling missions in the KC-135 and during close air support missions in the MQ-9. He has supported multiple combat operations including Operations ENDURING FREEDOM, FREEDOM'S SENTINEL, and INHERENT RESOLVE. Lt Col Alon has logged over 1,100 hours of combat flight time.

Designing Math That Moves: Fluency, Acceleration, and the Courage to Explore

With Casey Warmbrand

High-ability learners don’t simply need “more”; they need mathematics that moves—fluidly, flexibly, and creatively. This session uses the Alabama Mathematics Course of Study and the Numeracy Act as anchors for designing instruction that supports acceleration, deep conceptual understanding, and mathematical risk-taking. Participants will explore how to design rich task sequences, investigations, and open problems that promote multiple strategies, multiple representations, and authentic mathematical reasoning. We will examine approaches to curriculum compacting, flexible grouping, and grading structures that reward exploration and align with the Standards for Mathematical Practice. Teachers will leave with practical tools, classroom-ready examples, and a clear framework for cultivating fluency, creativity, and productive struggle in high-ability mathematics learners.

Casey Warmbrand is a mathematician, curriculum architect, and national leader in gifted mathematics education. With 25 years of experience spanning middle school through university instruction, he has contributed to state standards development, redesigned mathematics pathways, and led national professional learning for NAGC, NCTM, and international organizations focused on mathematical creativity. Casey’s work centers rich-task design, curriculum compacting, mathematical creativity, and equitable assessment practices aligned with the Standards for Mathematical Practice. He currently supports mathematics program innovation for gifted learners in Arizona, advances systemic change in mathematics education nationally, and directs an initiative focused on affordable housing reform. Outside of his professional work, Casey enjoys time with his wife, Erica, and son, Zeke, and is an avid pickleball player supporting the national governing body, USA Pickleball.
