A New Perspective from the Other Side of the Table

After ten years as a Special Education and Gifted Teacher, I moved into Psychometry. I was offered my dream job, overseeing the district’s gifted program, supervising other gifted specialists, and additional responsibilities. Despite a challenging commute, I loved it. However, health issues arose, leading to a "possible diagnosis" of MS. After the potential diagnosis, I found myself on the other side of the table having various assessments administered to myself. My doctor's appointment in 2023 brought a life-altering revelation. Now, I'm sharing my perspective to help understand students better, to tell the rest of my story, and to explore how my life has changed forever. Drawing from my experience, I will discuss how we can better identify and serve our gifted students.

Christy holds a BS in Collaborative Special Education k-6 from Jacksonville University, a masters from the University of Alabama as a Gifted Specialist, a masters from Dallas University in the area of MSLE (dyslexia), a masters from the University of Alabama in Birmingham in the area of School Psychometry, and an Ed.S from the University of West Alabama in the area of Collaborative Special Education k-12. She completed two semesters at the University of Alabama working on her Ph.D in Gifted Education, but during the second semester, her whole life changed. Married to Scott for almost 30 years, they share a love for their three dogs and seven cats. Christy enjoys traveling, kayaking, gardening, reading, painting, making jewelry, and various crafts. Pictured with Christy is her service dog, Vixen.
